Watched a Duggar wedding last night on TLC with David. Interesting.
So this family has 18 kids, yes 18, all birthed by the same woman, all have the same father. Crazy huh? They seem like a pretty nice family. Super conservative, very religious, home schooled, special. Not necessarily in a bad way, but definitely special.
Their oldest son got married on TV last night. The son is 20, don't know how old the bride was. So here's a little background... they believe in traditional courtship. Like ask the father before even dating, traditional. Once they got engaged they were excited because they had permission to hold hands. They couldn't go anywhere without a chaperon, even in public in broad daylight. And here's the kicker, they aren't kissing until they are married.
Admirable i suppose. I shouldn't knock it. But as the wedding approached they were talking about how they were excited for the first kiss and how they had talked about it a little bit. OK I'm sorry but if you're getting married you need to be aware that more than just a kiss is going to happen. For real people! Talk about a shocker come wedding night!
So purity is great. naivete, however, is a whole different thing.
Here is a list the father, of the 18 kids, made of his top 10 tips for a successful marriage. #1 sums up their philosophy perfectly.
What are peoples thoughts on the whole situation? This could be an interesting discussion :)

yep... no. 1 certainly seems to sum it all up...
Dude. I saw that. And I saw the one where they got engaged. AWKWARD! That's the only thing I can think when I watch that kid and his now-wife together. How freaking awkward. Purity... ok. But they handicap those kids socially for life. I don't know how any of them, but especially the girls who are told they are under the "authority" of their father and then husband, would hope to survive in the real world.
NOT TO MENTION the part in the vows where they vow to let God determine how many children they have... the human being who tried to tell me I'd have as many kids as "God" (biology) allowed would probably never say another word again. That's wacked. I almost threw something at my tv at that part. Glad you brought it up. Haha
LOL #1 wins. wow.
I haven't watched any of the Duggar stuff, but their philosophy of letting God decide how many kids they have and not doing anything to prevent pregnancy is something that I can understand and respect 100%. I don't see using birth control as a sign of weakness or not having faith in God's plan for us or anything, though, which is how that idea can come off sometimes. Really though, they are giving the kids a loving home and a nurturing environment with food and everything they need, so I think they are doing well.
Date night is good.
Opening doors, good, when practical. Not so much for car doors in the winter. I think the quote was (and I will be corrected if I'm wrong) - "Don't hold the door - hurry and get the car started so that it's not so cold in here!!!"
Coming from someone who got pregnant her first time (on her freaking WEDDING NIGHT, people), I'm all for the use of birth control.
I don't regret having Aidan, but it would have been nice to have more than just the honeymoon without all the psycho hormones.
And just because you can give birth to 3 kids (or 10, or 21, or even if you can't have kids) doesn't mean you can handle having that many kids. It doesn't mean that you CAN'T handle them, either.
That's just not cool to those people who would make great parents but can't have kids.
But the resposibility lies with the parents to know their own limitations.
And if I'm really as fertile as I feel like I am, I wouldn't use abstinence as the only form of birth control. That's not fair to my husband. Or me, quite frankly.
I think all of this is pure ridiculousness. I wonder how things are going now that "real life" has had a chance to kick in. I feel like they have a lot to catch up on...
I wanted to see this show so much, but I missed it (was out of town). You did a great job summing it up though, and explaining about the family. I like the show because even though they are a little special, it's good that they are standing up for what they believe in, and sharing that with the world.
