I won't be getting any surgery in the near future!
That's right, today i had my appointment with the other specialist in Murray. He was fantastic! He spent at least 20 minutes in the room with me explaining things to me and talking over my options. He looked at my X-rays and MRI and explained what he saw in them to me. He just helped me understand everything so much more than the other doctor! I'm sure it helps that he doesn't think i should get the horrible, huge surgery ever!
Things i learned at my appointment:
1. I have a genetic defect with my hip sockets that preconditions me to get arthritis. He could tell from the X-ray that my hip socket doesn't allow for my hip ball to rotate fully. The ball collides with the socket and that bone on bone contact will eventually cause arthritis, nothing i can do about it really. This may sound like bad news and i suppose that in the long run it is but since i couldn't have prevented it and there's not much i can do to change it, it's just nice to know what to expect.
2. The tear in my Labrum isn't that bad. I guess it can get completely detached from the bone and that is really bad because then it's always bone on bone but mine is just a little tear, no detachment!
3. Since i'm managing my pain fine now, i shouldn't get surgery until it is painful enough that i don't want to deal with it anymore or if i can't do the things that i want to because of my hip. So, since i'm fine, i haven't had significant pain or discomfort (except last week) since June, i don't have to get the surgery now! Yay. He told me that it might flair up every now and again and then calm down. When it starts doing that too often or the pain worsens that's when i should think about surgery. He also said that i should be fine for at least a year before i really need the surgery! Yay.
4. I should never get the big surgery that the other doctor wanted me to get! How wonderful does that sound?! He said that the big surgery is just too dangerous and it isn't very successful. He actually told me that some insurance companies are beginning to not cover this type of surgery because it isn't successful. When i am ready to have surgery he recommends a mix between the two surgeries. He will clean out the socket with the scope. Then he will cut me open, 3 inches, but instead of taking my hip out of socket they will just put my leg in traction and then shave the bone down so that i can get full range of motion for the ball. The recovery time for this surgery is a lot less. Only 1 month on crutches and 2-3 months for full recovery! Yay for not losing a year of my life in recovery! Sounds great to me!
So that's my happy news, i know what's really wrong, no surgery for now, and a better surgery in the future. It was a great decision to get that third opinion! The best! Dr. Momberger (yup that's his name) you rock!
After the appointment we went to get some breakfast with Amy. Good times! A great morning off!
